I have two nephews who are on the Spectrum - DS
I have two nephews who are on the Spectrum, one more pronounced than the other. Though I am familiar with Autism, Autism for Beginners is very informative. Not only for myself, but for children, parents, educators, and medical professionals.
The book provides a positive outlook and advice. I applaud the author, Jimmy Huston, for writing this outstanding book.
Enlightening and Transformative - Jaron Summers
"Autism for Beginners: Surfing the Spectrum" by Jimmy Huston is an enlightening and transformative work that reshapes our understanding of autism.
Rather than portraying it as a condition to be overcome, Huston celebrates it as a spectrum rich with diverse capabilities and talents. The book adeptly weaves together engaging narratives and historical anecdotes to illuminate the lives of iconic figures from Leonardo da Vinci to Einstein.
It proposes that their remarkable contributions to art, philosophy, and science may have been influenced by traits commonly associated with autism. This powerful premise posits autism as an often distinctive advantage, offering an inspiring perspective on the capabilities and potential of those on the spectrum.
Designed with TLC, the book serves as a beacon of hope for parents and guardians, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to support their children in unlocking their fullest potential. Huston emphasizes the importance of embracing and nurturing the unique qualities and talents inherent in individuals with autism, suggesting that these traits can pave the way for exceptional achievements and contributions to society.
Infused with optimism, the narrative seeks to dismantle outdated stigmas and foster a more inclusive and appreciative understanding of neurodiversity.
Moreover, "Autism for Beginners: Surfing the Spectrum" is presented with sensory-rich content, employing vivid imagery and dynamic color use that mirrors a symphony of visuals. These artistic elements not only augment the reader's engagement but also reflect the vibrancy and depth of the autistic experience. The book’s visual appeal is in harmony with its message, making it an accessible and enjoyable read for audiences of all ages.
This is more than a mere publication; it is an educational resource, a source of solace for families navigating the intricacies of autism, and a celebration of the limitless potential within the autistic mind.
It is an essential guide for anyone seeking a deeper, more positive understanding of autism, providing a comprehensive exploration of the spectrum that is both enlightening and transformative. Readers are invited to embark on a journey of understanding and acceptance, envisioning a future where autism is acknowledged not for its challenges, but for the extraordinary perspectives and innovations it contributes to the world.
I cannot think of a more poignant way to help a young person recognize their special talents that could change the world than by gifting them, or even better, reading with them, a copy of "Autism for Beginners: Surfing the Spectrum." I strongly feel that this could inspire not just acceptance but also a celebration of their unique contributions to our shared humanity.

I picked this up at a Book Festival. This insightful book serves as an invaluable starting point for readers navigating the complexities of life on the Autism spectrum. Tailored for older children yet equally enlightening for adults and parents of autistic children, it fosters a sense of camaraderie by highlighting the experiences of notable individuals on the spectrum. Emphasizing the vast array of possibilities and encouraging a positive outlook reassures readers that they are not alone and their potential remains boundless. While staying mostly positive, it also offers practical advice on managing negativity. Overall, this engaging read strikes a balance between empathy and empowerment, making it a highly recommended read.

Making an enormously complicated subject simple! - Michelle
I have to admit to being completely ignorant about the subject of autism. This very simple, yet superbly enlightening book of Mr Houston's, has made it easy for me to understand both myself and others. It's not often that something as simple as this is so enlightening, pleasant, and enjoyable to read!
Takes the Disorder out of being Autistic - G. Courter
What a refreshing view of autism! First it helps the child--or any person--see whether or not they have some of the characteristics of being on the spectrum and then allows them to see it as a strength and gift, rather than a reason to feel different and less than the amazing person they are. It is easy to identify with the thinkers and artists who may not have won popularity contests, but contributed greatness to the world.
This books takes something that might have been considered a problem and reframes it into a positive force with endless possibilities.
A Big Hug on Every Page - Leslie
This charming and informative book is a must read for young people diagnosed with autism as well as the adults who care about them. While offering a clear and simple understanding of the condition, it presents the advantages as well as the challenges of having a brain that processes things differently. Many well known people who have learned to successfully navigate life while being on the spectrum are presented as inspiring examples of possibility. Colorfully illustrated, and written with compassion, empathy, and humor, there is a big hug on every page.
Very affirming and informative, plus enjoyable to read - Heather
Well written and very accessible in style. Such a stigmatized “syndrome” is defined, broadened and deepened without academic dryness or clinical drama. His characterizations of the demographic
are highly respectful and affirming for individuals and supporting groups.
NOT ONLY INFORMATIVE, BUT WRITTEN WITH HONESTY, COMPASSION AND HUMOR - Heather
I bought this book because I have a great nephew who is on the spectrum with Asberger’s and I wanted to learn all I could about how he thinks and feels. I am so glad I did! Not only is it very informative, but it is an honest and very uplifting view of life with autism.
It is written for the child with autism and explains such things as what “being on the spectrum” means and feelings the child with autism may have but not be able to explain. It talks about famous people throughout history who were autistic and autistic people who have gone on to be notable athletes. It approaches other life subjects such as education, family and love. And all of this is written with humor and compassion.
I originally purchased this book for me, but when I read it, I realized how wonderful it would be for my nephew and I ordered a copy for him and his mom. Since then, I have ordered another copy for a friend whose daughter is on the spectrum. If you love someone on the spectrum, work with or are friends with someone on the spectrum, or just want to know more about autism, I highly recommend this book.
I have since bought Jimmy Huston’s book about dyslexia because my niece is dyslexic and highly recommend it also.
